Big difference between first & second halves

Tottenham beat Toronto 3-2 and it really was a game of two halves, we fielded two teams apart from goalkeeper Brad Friedel who is slow in diving to the floor now.

TFC vs THFC

As expected we saw a different Spurs back on a proper surface, grass. Ben Davies started at left-back with Kyle Naughton at right-back, Younès Kaboul and 18-year-old Miloš Veljković at centre-back in front of 43-year-old Brad Friedel.

The midfield was Étienne Capoue, Ryan Mason, with a triumvirate of Erik Lamela, Aaron Lennon and Christian Eriksen behind Roberto Soldado.

Right from the outset Tottenham were pressing the Toronto back line and was very busy, closing them down quickly. Aaron Lennon started on the left with Erik Lamela on the right, yet he scored both his first half goals from the left channel.

That really emphasises what I have been writing since before we appointed Mauricio Pochettino, that he will want the front four interchanging. Aaron Lennon was involved in the left channel a lot and Soldado did little and struggled to have any impact. I haven't changed my view from before we signed Pochettino, I'm not sure he fits the system.

The second half from a Tottenham point of view was a mess. Ten changes with only Friedel keeping his place saw the midfield give little or no cover to the back four. Ceballos gave the ball away easily which allowed Toronto to run straight at our defence, one pass, goal. He catches the eye going forward but defensively non existent almost.

Carroll needs a Premier League loan spell, Holtby was a one man midfield almost. I thought at first he was playing his own system but I think those around him were so inexperienced he was trying to do it all.

Toronto gave the ball away, Holtby broke passed to Townsend who cut inside and shot past the keeper to record a win.

A marked drop in standard from our play in the first half, Lamela was the stand out performer and now it's on to Chicago for a game against the Fire.
