Make or break season for Carroll

As with Jake Livermore last summer, we have an abundance of midfielders who won't get a game. Ryan Mason had a great pre-season and has jumped ahead of Tom Carroll in the pecking order.

Make or break season for Carroll

Livermore went on loan to Hull, played every week, got to an FA Cup final and has now signed an £7 million deal with £1 million of add-ons should the clauses be achieved. Arsenal have used the loan system for their youngsters sending them out on season long Premier League loans to come back better players. That will be the hope now for Tom Carroll who is now 22 who has gone backwards as a footballer.

At the moment he telegraphs every pass with his body shape and needs to learn to use both the instep and outside of both feet to increase not only the range of his passing but it's disguise. One attribute he does seem to possess is vision and that is crucial, the better players have it because they are constantly looking around to see where everyone is, both their own and opposition players. Then when the ball arrives they seem to have more time, which is because they already know what they are going to do with the ball.

Carroll has been sent on a season long loan to Swansea City to join their earlier signing from us Gylfi Sigurdsson, which should help the England Under 21 international settle.

It will be a big season for Carroll if he is to start fulfilling the potential h has. At the end of his loan spell Spurs can then decide whether they should stick with him or sell him. The ball is firmly in Carroll's court.

His transfer reduces the squad size by one but it doesn't reduce the non-home grown quota, which still needs to happen, especially with the imminent arrival of Argentine Federico Fazio it seems.
