Is Fazio being groomed for captaincy
I suspected when he was purchased that Federico Fazio was considered the Tottenham captain in waiting. He was bought to replace the then captain Michael Dawson, who left in a £3.87 million deal for Hull City.
He was allowed time to settle before being introduced and looked shaky at times and good at other times. He was sent off twice but not more acclimatised in the expected fixture at the centre of the defence with Jan Vertonghen, the centre-back pairing we fans were expecting from the start.
There are still issues with him being caught as he learns about the Premier League but gives us a commanding presence in the air. He was the captain of Sevilla and lifted the UEFA Europa League last season to add to his other trophies.

That all suggests he may be the sort of player we require and that is confirmed when you hear him speak. He displays the growth mentality, the winning mentality we have not seen enough of recently. His words keep feet on the ground, accept there are improvements to be made, even when we win, and seeks to make those improvements.
Early in the season Younes Kaboul, as club captain, was always talking to the media, now you hardly hear from him yet hear from Fazio frequently. I just wonder if he is being groomed to take over next season, clearly he has the attitude and the ability to handle the media side of things.

I have not taken any notice but obviously Sevilla saw captaincy material in him so a eye will have to be kept on him on the pitch to see if and how he is demonstrating that. A team needs winners, it needs leaders in all areas. With Fazio alongside Vertonghen, both ahead of Hugo Lloris, Tottenham have three on the field leaders centrally in defence.
With goalkeepers not the ideal captains [communication limitations] and few captaincy options to choose from, it may boil down to a decision between Fazio and Vertonghen, if Vertonghen is still at the club of course.
If Pochettino has Fazio in mind then he may become more of a leader n the field as the season progresses.
