Spurs Striker Target Series - 1

In the first of a series of posts we take a look at some of the targets Tottenham have been recently evaluation as we seek a replacement to add goals to our front line. Any purchases depend upon player sales and being able to clear a non-home grown player slot in the squad, as we have no places available at the moment.

Marseilles striker Andre-Pierre Gignac is a free agent next summer and Marseilles under Marcelo Bielsa, play the same style Pochettino wants to play at Tottenham. Marseilles currently sit top of the French league above PSG.

The 29-year-old is interesting, AC Milan, Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle, Galatasaray, Wolfsburg and Dynamo Moscow but Marseilles are hoping the French international signs a new contract.

A month ago the clubs president, Vincent Labrune and two former presidents were detained by French Police investigating the transfer of Gignac to Marseilles in 2010 and whether illicit payments were made. He has scored 12 goals in 17 Ligue 1 games this season, a goal every 125 minutes.

As you can see he has spent his whole career in the French league scoring 109 goals in 335 games with 30 assists.

Taking into account the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Ligue 1, players from the French league are, physiologically, the hardest working with the highest total distance run and distance in high intensity (sprint + high speed). The number of challenges is relatively high, second to only the English Premier League. Players also take the most number of touches per ball possession.

Arsene Wenger build many a team by plundering the French league so perhaps a strikers achievements over there deserve greater acclaim then they actually get, being most similar to the Premier League.

He is 1.86m (6ft 1in) so has aerial ability and is a powerful striker. The problem for Marseilles is they may not be able to afford to keep him with French tax law reforms as Labrune revealed.

“It’s going to happen because employer contributions and taxes have gone through the roof in France. We would like to keep him, but it seems to me utopian to think that he will lower his salary to stay with us.
“His agent is right to say that, with his current displays, he is more likely to get better offers. But he loves the city and the club, so we’re going to talk.”

He is offside a lot and his passing needs improving so there are aspects to his game that would be a concern and he isn't blessed with great pace, increasingly a requirement at the top level.
