£35m Bartra available for £7m

Speculation season is in full swing with leagues drawing to a close in Europe. Players have been watched and pre transfer talks have taken place with agents and clubs.

Directors of football, ours included have been offering players to clubs and informing agents their clients need to find new employment, some rather reluctantly. Alternatives will have been sounded out, what sort of package would they want, what sort of fee may be involved, each club has to have an idea of what is going to be possible and what is not.

Then of course some players who have not been getting the games they want, all players want to start and not keep making substitute appearances. Some players reassess their position, some clubs have simply held on to players to provide cover, the way we held on to Vlad Chiriches as cover for Kyle Walker, even though a deal to leave had all been agreed, in principle.

When Barcelona players become available everyone takes notice. There have been reports recently regarding 27-year-old Pedro being available for £7 million and now news that 24-year-old centre-back Marc Bartra is not happy with the game time he has been getting.

The story comes from Catalan daily newspaper Diario Sport who say Bartra has a buyout clause of €50 million, £35.49 million at today's rate. Exchange rates are in the pounds favour right now so Euro transfer fees are cheaper than they have been for a while, it works the other way of course and makes our players expensive to buy.

Because of the limited playing time Luis Enrique has given him at the Camp Nou in La Liga matches his buyout clause drops to €10 million, £7.1 million at current rates. The clause has been triggered because he has not been picked for 60% of the matches, currently he is fourth choice.

That is sure to alert a host of clubs but whether the player is actually seeking an exit or whether the story has been leaked to force talks with Barcelona ahead of their presidential election is unclear. A similar clause saw Thiago Alcantara leave for Bayern Munich but it would be somewhat of a surprise if Bartra turned up at Tottenham though.
