Lamela staying at Spurs for off the field reasons

Argentinian Erik Lamela is a man in the news of late with both stay and go stories, so which should we Spurs fans believe, which is more likely?

Lamela arrived from Roma as a replacement for Gareth Bale, the thought was that he would transfer the skill he had shown in Italy to the Premier League and become the next £40m-50m+player.

That obviously has not happened and fans are trying to latch on to the scraps of his ability he is showing. Football is tough, you don't win things by carrying players and to a large extent Tottenham are still carrying him.

Mauricio Pochettino has publicly backed the Argentinian and told Daniel Levy to turn down all offers for him, which would appear to back his ability and future at Tottenham. However there is more to this than meets the eye. These things are often said to boost a players value and intimate to potential buyers to make the highest possible bid. Pochettino also knows the situation at Tottenham, he knows the financial constraints he has to work to.

Juventus are said to be 'very interested' in signing Lamela and bringing him back to Serie A where he was such a success previously. Juventus are at the moment the top club in Italy and after struggling in Europe for the last few years have now secured a place in the UEFA Champions League final.

They are the 10th richest club in Europe, richer than us and their path to the Champions League final will have boosted their income from there. they may well overtake Liverpool this season. Clearly they have the funds, they can offer him the wages and opportunities to win trophies.

Again on the face of it that all sounds as though there is a real possibility it could happen, you can make a case both ways.

Below the surface is probably where the answer lies.

Erik Lamela cost £30 million, £4.2 million of which was add-ons, payments only triggered by certain conditions, number of games, trophies won, qualification for European competitions etc. If any of the conditions of his add-ons are not met then that element of his add-on is not triggered and therefore not payable. His transfer fee is therefore £25.8 million plus some extras.

If Tottenham were to sell at the moment we would have to take a loss on him as he is not worth what we paid for him in the current market. We also paid £26 million for Roberto Soldado of which I believe £2 million was add-ons, Valencia didn't want any at first. The Spaniard will be sold this summer and we will have to take a loss on him as also he is not worth what we paid for him.

Spurs can not afford to take a big hit on two players, the loss would virtually wipe out our transfer budget, thus we can only afford to take a hit on one player this summer, that player will be Soldado.

When you bear that in mind Tottenham therefore will not want to sell Erik Lamela unless we can recoup most of our money. The euro is weak, making the pound strong, €1 is worth around £0.71171 abut when we bought him €1 was at £0.79099, so today he is 0.7928p in the pound more expensive to Italian clubs, which works out as £2.05 million more expensive.

You would expect instead of the £25.8 million clubs from Italy would now offer around €20 million (£14.22 million). They only wanted to pay €12/13 million (£8.54-9.25 million) for Soldado last summer, the euro is even weaker now.

Knowing we can not afford to sell him I have no doubt Pochettino's words were designed to have the impact they did, to show total support for Lamela in the full knowledge that he was staying anyway. Unless Juventus throw ridiculous money that means we don't lose a lot then I don't see him going anywhere.
