Bartra opt to stay at Barcelona

Barcelona centre-back Marc Bartra is to stay at the Catalan club and not activate his release clause.

Tottenham Hotspur has been oe of many clubs interested in signing 24-year-old Marc Bartra, but Luis Enrique has convinced him to stay at Barcelona. Whether that turns into a sensible move or not he'll have to wait and see.

His well-documented release clause was activated because he hadn't played more than 60% of Barcelona games for more than 30 minutes, although Barcelona claimed friendlies counted and so he did. We see it time and time again where a player is convinced to sat at a club and told his is part of the managers plans, when in fact what he means is a still want you as cover in case of injury or, as seems the case with Barcelona, it isn't convenient to buy a replacement yet.

Barcelona are still chasing Paul Pogba and will need to raise money next summer if the deal goes through, they want to leave Pogba in Italy for a season and sign him next summer as Barcelona can't play any players they sign until January. Play him in cup games, give him 30-minute substitute appearances and they can boost his price to nearer his true value.

Barcelona released a Tweet on Sunday confirming Bartra had confirmed to the board he will stay. It's his home club and one he is reluctant to leave if there is a possibility he can get game time and stay. Tottenham, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Porto all held discussions with his agent but to no avail.

As fifth choice, he has a fight on his hands but he is prepared to stay and fight so we can cross him off any incoming list.
