History says wait until tomorrow to sign anyone

We Tottenham fans would love to see a signing or two so we can see our squad take shape and assess our chances for next season.

Looking back though I find on the 29th June 2007 we lavished £16.5 million on Darren Bent. We bought him from Charlton and offloaded him to Sunderland just two seasons later. He needed the whole team to work for him and create chances for him, but we didn't play that way, preferring to have more than on goal threat.

On 30th June 1995 we complete the record transfer fee signing of Chris Armstrong from Crystal Palace £4.5 million. He was bought to replace Jurgen Klinsmann and won the League Cup with us in 1999. In 2002 he came to the end of his contract and was released. Armstrong had an injury-hit time with us scoring 48 goals in 144 games.

Today in 2006 we completed the signing of Didier Zokora from St Etienne for £10.87 million after a good showing in the World Cup. In October of that year he contracted malaria. The Ivory Coast defensive midfielder was in the team which won the League Cup in 2008 and lost on penalties to Manchester United the following season. In 134 games for us he didn't score and was replaced by Wilson Palacios in January 2009. He was sold to Sevilla at the end of the season for £7.92 million.

Also in 2006 we, for some reason, we let Anthony Gardner sign a new three-year deal. The George Graham signing seemed to make a mistake a game and was never universally popular as a result. At the end of his first season, he suffered knee ligament damage and was out until December making only 13 appearances. He made 7 league appearances in another, then 17 and 8 league appearances the following two seasons again because of injury. The following season he was stretchered off in October and he left in January.

It seems yesterday and today are not the days to sign successful Spurs players so waiting until July before we do is a sensible move if history is to tell us anything.
