New stadium to help Spurs game

There have been numerous delays and amendments to the original plans for the new stadium as Daniel Levy and the board look to maximise its positive impact for the club.

The agreement was eventually reached with Archway Steel Metal Works, who move out later this year, leaving the club to press ahead with the new stadium without having obstacles in the way. An agreement with the NFL for the next 10 years and the possibility of hosting a London based team in the future.

That deal is far bigger and holds more opportunity than the average fan realises. Financially it could well be a master stroke and it's the financial side that will drive the team on to winning trophies, money is essential to that in leagues across Europe. PSG, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, and in second-tier leagues teams like Porto out muscle the competition.

England boss Roy Hodgson has complained about the state of the Wembley pitch after NFL games so having a lower artificial field where the front row seats don't have to be shut as they do at Wembley helps to create a unique intimate atmosphere for American football in this country. The delays, this deal and the changing stadium design  has contributed to the thus far, £41 million (US$64.29m - AUS$83.40m - €57.82m) the Northumberland Development Project has cost Tottenham, according to the 2014 accounts.

The pitch size has always interested me as Spurs have one of the smaller playing surfaces in the Premier League. I have always felt our passing style requires a bigger pitch. While that may impact on our pressing, it has a positive impact when we are attacking as we look to pass our way through defences. Barcelona do not seem to have too many problems pressing on a larger pitch so we may have to look at how they cope with it. A bigger playing surface will stretch the defence that little more and create slightly bigger gaps for us to exploit, at least that is the hope.

Andre Villa-Boas is not the only Spurs head coach to have had reservations about the size of the pitch, Mauricio Pochettino has too as he explained after the Newcastle United defeat.

“Our style means we need a bigger space to play because we play a positional game. It’s true that White Hart Lane is a little bit tight and it’s better for the opponent when they play deep.
"On Sunday there were two shots from Newcastle – it was unlucky for us. And they play deep. West Bromwich play deep, Liverpool the same, they play very deep and it was difficult for us. We need time to adapt to our new set-up and to understand better our position on the pitch.

An American football field is 110m (120 yards) long while the White Hart Lane pitch is
currently only 100m (110 yards) long. Premier League rule K21 requires a 105m (114 yards) length, which is simply taken from UEFA specifications.

A quick visit to Wikipedia tells us that a stadium must be category four to host games in the play-offs of the qualifying stage for the UEFA Champions League or any game in the main competition. Category four is also required to host any game in the main competition of the UEFA Europa League or the UEFA European Football Championship.

UEFA President Michel Platini wants European Cup finals to be held at stadiums with an average capacity of 70,000 to solve security issues. It makes sense, therefore, to have the future facility to increase the capacity of the new stadium at White Hart Lane.

A category four pitch must be 105m long by 68m (74 yards) wide so the new pitch at the new stadium will be 5m longer by 1m wider. There are currently 11 pitches that meet the size criteria, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Norwich City, Southampton, Sunderland, Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion.

The big teams play a pressing style, Robbie Savage commented on Breath Sport that the UEFA Champions League Final was superb by the sides without the ball. That will be a key element in any success we have, it is the unseen work almost.

The more space you give a creative player the more danger he can do so a bigger pitch, a creative attacking midfield allied with intelligent running off the ball should see Spurs creating more clear-cut chances, as we do take a lot of long-range shots. If we can shoot from closer you would expect us to score more.

A larger pitch could have a positive impact on our game and the atmosphere the stadium will generate needs to be turned into a factor as well. The Lane needs to be a fortress and with the crowd closer to the playing surface of any comparable stadium in the country and the largest single tier stand in the UK adding to that atmosphere it will be a place that can drive our players on. Any success is built on home success, without that winning anything is severely impard.

Being a creative side that scores goals with an atmosphere like no other and that could be acomplished, here's hoping.
