Pochettino Radio Interview Part 3 - Hollywood + Spurs are bigger than Saints

Back in February Mauricio Pochettino was interviewed by Barcelona-based radio station RAC1, the main Catalan language private radio station, at our world class training facilities. In Part 3 he talks about the North London Derby, about Spurs being bigger than Southampton plus we see Spurs through the eye of a Hollywood story.

RMC1: On Saturday you play in the North London derby at White Hart Lane against Arsenal.  I’m sure the people around the club have told you about how important it is, the rivalry between the two sides?

Pochettino: Yeah, we’ve already played them away at the Emirates and we drew 1-1.  We’ve seen how much it means to everyone.  I think it’s the real London derby.  It’s a special game as the sides are separated by so little – we’re almost level on points in the league.  We’re hoping for a great game.

THBN: And that is exactly what we got a great game with a Garry Kane winner late on after Tottenham had dominated. Ryan Mason was immense in midfield epitomizing what desire and motivation can do for a player. It's that sort of motivation  that players need to have in every game so finding what actually does truly motivate them can see it applied on a daily basis. The difference it wold make to the side is vast. We totally dominated Arsenal and it's not every season we can ay that.

RMC1: Do you notice huge a difference between Southampton and Tottenham? Do you feel like Tottenham has more history and as such is the bigger side?

Pochettino: Yes. They’re completely different to each other. Southampton have invested a lot of money and maintained their position in the league; built on what we started there but there is the history at Tottenham and the culture here is very different to that at Southampton.

THBN: Some fans do unfortunately do have chips on their shoulders and like to pretend the reality of football doesn't exist, but like it or not it does. Tottenham are a bigger club than many in the division and equally there are bigger clubs than Spurs, both home and abroad. Players will always look to improve themselves by moving to bigger clubs with more financial muscle.

The likes of Real Madrid poach our players, just as we look to poach players from other clubs, getting bitter about it isn't very pleasant, resist it, fight against it, but abuse and profanity, it says more about the perpetrator than the recipient.

RMC1: Southampton have done really well this season and find themselves in a great position under Ronald Koeman. Their momentum has continued and they could possibly make history.

Pochettino: You need to add that they spent around €80-90m in the summer.  They also have a fighting, determined dynamic.  When we arrived in the middle of the season they were the team which had conceded the most goals in the Premier League.  They had a lot of problems.  Lallana wasn’t playing, nor was Luke Shaw.  Calum Chambers was playing in the under 18s and in a year and half we changed everything and finished 8th, bringing through a lot of young players.

RMC1: And now they’re competing for a Champions League spot with Tottenham, Arsenal and with Liverpool.

Pochettino: It’s always easier to join a club where the dynamic and winning mentality is already in place than the one we inherited when we went there, with all the problems.  We had to reinvent the club, to give them back things which they had lost.  We left a team that basically trains itself after a year and a half at Southampton.  And because of everything we had achieved and implemented at Southampton the players trained at an incredible level, too.  To leave and start from scratch here at Tottenham, from zero, was a big challenge.  But little by little we’re getting there.

THBN: The last two sentences Pochettino says speak volumes, I'm not sure many Spurs fans have grasped the fact he was starting from scratch yet. To achieve anything the mindset has to be right, it wasn't at Spurs so that had to change. Those that bought into the future plans can benefit from that, those that resist it need to either be brought round or released.

Only when you have a full squad behind what we are trying to do, do you then really start to push forward with any vigour, until then you are preparing, making do. What we achieved last season was despite those dragging the club down to their level, by that I mean the Adebayor andKaboul's of this world. I don't need to go into the November issue again, but successful people associate with successful people, the rest subconsciously pull you back, they'll tell you something won't work simply because of their limiting beliefs.

Adebayor, Lennon, Kaboul, Capoue, Paulinho all for one reason or another either didn't want to do double training or didn't buy into the high-energy high-press game we have adopted. playing them and keeping their negativity within a positive group is detrimental to improvement. We have had to play a very busy schedule with three-quarters of a squad, which was essential to force those players out the door instead of hanging on as players have consistently done in the past.

As Pochettino says we are getting there little by little. Last season was the beginning of a journey and this summer there have been clear steps further along the trail. We are preparing for battle, will have our ups and downs, but we will be better equipped with each passing season.

In any Hollywood story there is an ordinary individual or group who become the hero. At first they are not equipped to achieve success, they'll be defeated and then get expert guidance when they will train to defeat their foe, there will be time when all hope is lost before inspiration brings them back from the depths to triumph in the end.

Relate that to Spurs journey and you can see what is happening and where we are at in the film.
