The solution to improvement is simple, in theory

The pessimist in some fans believe that any time a Tottenham player gets good they will leave and some will, but equally some won't and it's around those that a squad revolves.

The list of players who has left Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale simply demonstrates the quality of player Tottenham  can develop, both Berbatov and Modric you could argue improved while at Spurs.

Dwelling on the past doesn't solve the future and getting too attached to a player is, in the long run for fans, unhealthy, it simply causes anger and resentment. The present is interesting though, optimistic even.

Tottenham seem to have a young group of players now with a bond for the club with 22-year-old (23 next July) Harry Kane, 23-year-old (24 next February) Christian Eriksen and 25-year-old (26 in August) Nacer Chadli perhaps three who may stick around. Kane has remarked he wants to stay at the club for his career if he can, Eriksen is happy at the club as if Chadli, who both give the impression of being this is where we want to be players rather than this is a stepping stone club type players.

All three scored goals last season and if 23-year-old (24 next March) Érik Lamela can find his scoring boots Tottenham would have danger from all four forward positions, which makes us a more formidable unit. We can't be playing as a side to be trying to get out of trouble all the time so naturally we have to improve defensively.

Our problem in January was very clear with two statistics being very revealing, that only two sides shot from an average longer distance than Spurs while only two sides faced more shots than Hugo Lloris. Clearly we needed to lower the number of shots against us and shoot from closer to the goal. Sounds simply but unless we create more clear cut chances we are relying too much on luck, the further away from goal you shoot from the chances of scoring diminish.

We scored a healthy number of goals, that needs to continue but needs to be tempered by better team defending. If we are to defend better, we may well become less effective at the other end which means we have to be more creative when we are around the box and more clinical when we get the chance.

Kane, Eriksen and Chadli allow Pochettino the chance to build a side around them, quickly and the buying this summer suggests that is taking place. An assembled squad can then develop together which may help them stay together and benefit Tottenham in the longer term as well as the short term.
