Spurs enquire about Meireles

One thing lacking with all the youthful energy is the Tottenham squad are the wise old heads who act as cover and step in when required.

They are there to guide the youngsters, pass on their experience and help them handl the difficult situations. Players liten to and repond to people they trust and if someone has been there and done it young players can be like a sponge soaking up all they can to improve their game.

Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen are the two main men you would suggest have the experience along with Kyle Walker and in European football Federico Fazio. Many have suggested we need to add to that and we have looked at an experienced striker but it seems we will end up with three youthful ones instead. Central midfield is an area that needs either a wise old head or a high quality injection.

The story that we are holding talks with 32-year-old (33 next March) former Chelsea, Liverpool and Porto player Raul Meireles stems from the website of Sky's Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio. The story is actually by David Amoyal who is the manager of the website and writes it's content, together with freelance work.

He reports that Meireles is leaving Fenerbahçe and that Tottenham have not only made an inquiry but have met with his agents to see if the move is a possibility or not. Despite spending to build a side, among others they have signed Robin van Persie and Nani, Fenerbahçe were dumped out the UEFA Champions League last night by Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0.

The Portuguese international can play in a variety of midfield positions both deep or more attacking, for both Porto and Portugal he has played mainly as a defensive midfielder, At the Turkish side he currently plays as an orthodox central midfielder perhaps more the Ryan Mason role if used in our system.

Being two footed is a bonus but whether he wants to be playing every week or as a squad player we don't know, the meetings with his agent will have determine that.
