Who should start against Man United?

It is only a week until the first game of the season against Manchester United at Old TRafford and while we may well bring in new players before then it is unlikely that they will start.

Touring the net and looking at the teams fans are selecting we have Toby Alderweireld, a proven Premier League centre-back in our system, Southampton play the same way, selected in midfield with Dier in defence. A strange choice, surely Alderweireld has to start in defence alongside Vertonghen, the pair having played together at Ajax. We need stability in central defence so why not let them begin their partnership instead of playing him out of position in midfield.

He van play the defensive midfield role but he is not a specialist there, just a part-timer. It makes little sense to start putting square pegs in round holes to start the season, especially as with Bentaleb playing the other defensive midfielder is a link midfielder charged with joining the attack.

If we need some stability there and feel that Ryan Mason won't be ready or will get targeted aerially again then Mousa Dembélé could easily step into the breach. It is a little early for Dele Alli, despite impressing in training and in the MLS All-Star game. He'll be brought along this season unless he bursts onto the scene in the way Mason and Kane did.

The suggestion we should play Veljkovic there is bizarre, this is Manchester United not a game to be starting him in when it is this season that he'll start to get a few cameo roles, he isn't ready for a starting role in such a game.

We don't yet know which way the Kieran Trippier Kyle Walker battle will go yet so the Old Trafford game will show us who is first choice. Rose undoubtedly will start before Davies after last seasons performances and Nabil Bentaleb will play as the defensive midfielder with greater defensive duties.

Hugo Lloris may or may not be fit, it will be touch and go which does rather affect our defence. Hugo Lloris is a keeper sweeper which helps our high line defence but Vorm is more a stay at home goalkeeper. He is a shot stopper and as yet doesn't inspire the same level of confidence.

Kane will start up front with Eriksen and Chadli certainties to start behind him, presumably with Lamela.

What won't happen is the crazy decision to play 4-3-3, we are building a squad to play 4-2-3-1, if the intention is to change the system then you have to question the purchases we have then made The full-backs have more to do in a 4-2-3-1 system than a 4-3-3, the midfielders need different qualities and they have to run past the attackers to get into the area, ours don't.
