Done Deal - Wanyama to Spurs

The Daily Mirror are telling that Tottenham have won a non-existent race with Leicester City to sign Victor Wanyama. As we all know Wanyama wanted to join us last summer and Southampton refused to let him go. This summer he reiterated his desire to join Tottenham to the then coach Ronald Koeman and the Southampton board.

There is ITK in Spurs forums that suggests the deal has been agreed and guesstimates put the figure around the £11-million (EUR13.98m - AUS$21.31m - US$15.74m) I recently reported. His transfermarkt valuation is £11.25m. There is also a Tweet from journalist Ben Fairthorne suggesting just a medical is needed. That fits in with the last few posts that terms were already agreed with Wanyama and that there was just a fee to sort out.

Wanyama has listened to an offer from Leicester, but has opted for Spurs. Personal terms all agreed. Deal done - subject to a medical.

With only a year left on his contract the Southampton board have as expected decided to take the money, they normally have a policy of not allowing players to have less than two years remaining on their contracts to ensure they retain their transfer value.

Mauricio Pochrttino left the South coast club because they wouldn't give him assurances over players and it would be no surprise to me if Ronald Koeman didn't start to look elsewhere for the same reason. He will have known where he stood in January.

Signing Wanyama gives us several options, he can play in place of Dier allowing him to have some rest. He can come on and help us defend leads with Dier alongside him or gives us a solid defensive platform away from home. It also allows Eric Dier to act as centre-back cover for Toby Alderweireld, given the news from Harry Redknapp that the Spurs staff think he is an outstanding centre-back of the future.

It should be said that there is no source quoted by the Mirror, just the fact he is coming to Spurs, which we have known for a while. There is nothing to suggest either Ryan Mason or Nabil Bentaleb were offered in part exchange, that looks very much like incorrect guesswork from the journalist to me, especially given Bentaleb from what I hear isn't for sale, nor is Mason unless an offer we can't refuse comes in.
