Barcelona and Spurs

Barcelona are in the UEFA Champions League final against Italian giants Juventus so naturally it is story time for Barcelona players in the media.

In addition to a cup final there is the small matter of presidential elections to appoint the Barcelona supremo. Barcelona are chasing a treble while their B team are in serious danger of being relegated from Segunda B. Barca B are one off the bottom in 21st place after 39 games

19 Santander P39 PTS 38 GD -13
20 Sabadell P39 PTS 37 GD -21
21 Barcelona B P39 PTS 36 GD -22
22 Recreativo Huelva P39 PTS 35 GD -24

Having the B team relegated is not good for a president, nor was losing Thiago Alcântara to Bayern Munich because of a playing time clause in his contract. It is now emerging that the 60% playing time clause was not only in hi contract so 24-year-old Spanish international Marc Bartra can leave for just £7.1 million, when with playing time his buyout clause is £35.49 million.

Winger come forward Pedro, full name Pedro Eliezer Rodríguez Ledesma, who is 27 and has been linked with a big money move to us before is now available for just £7 million. Barcelona have offered him to Premier League clubs with only a year left on his contract.

A talented Spanish international winning footballer for just £7 million in a position we are looking to fill with experience of winning things, we have got to be interested, I suspect though that without Champions League football we would have little chance. You never know though so if Pochettino feels he would fit our system and given the intricate football we often play surely he would, then you have to try.

I am not in the camp that a player is out of reach so you shouldn't try to sign them, that's admitting defeat and limiting yourself, not a winning mentality at all. You try and if you don't succeed you have lost nothing, it doesn't stop you pursuing other targets at the same time, we don't try one transfer then start at the beginning on the next one, you'd never get anything done.

News from Spain from The Sport who report that Tottenham Hotspur are pursuing 19-year-old Spanish striker Sandro Ramírez (sounds like a good name to have at the Lane), along with Newcastle United and Stoke City.

Despite being only 19 Ramírez has played 7 La Liga games, a total of 152 minutes, scoring 2 goals, 3 Champions League games totalling 61 minutes, scoring 1 goal and 2 Copa del Rey games totalling 60 minutes, scoring 1 goal this season. That's 12 appearances in the senior team for a total of 273 minutes (equivalent to 3 full games) scoring 4 goals in the process. For Barcelona B he has 8 goals and 1 assist in 30 outings.

Tottenham met with Barcelona when Andre Villas-Boas was at the club and discussed youth football. Like other clubs we keep a close eye on the youth academy players at Barcelona, It is famed around the world and is run on the basis that it must pay for itself, some players therefore have to be sold. Potential stars, just like ourselves, are kept and loaned out, which is the option the paper suggests would be best for Barcelona.

Negotiating before a presidential election will be difficult, selling a future star or letting a player leave cheaply because of a contract clause would not go down well. Tottenham are regularly linked with Barcelona players but in all fairness Tottenham can't offer Champions League football so signing established stars from them is always going to be difficult and that's before you consider the wages they might be on.

Will Pochettino's links with Spain and the Catalan region make a difference, he still lives there, it's where his family home is and he managed Catalan club Espanyol, as well as playing for them. It would be nice to finally acquire a young Spanish talent from Barcelona but our track record isn't very good.
